MBBR extrusion tooling

MBBR Extrusion Tooling are specifically designed for the production of wastewater treatment packing materials, with HDPE 5502 being the preferred substrate. For equipment selection, a 65mm extruder is suitable for single and double-cavity packing materials, while a four-cavity structure requires a 75mm or larger model. Product diameters are primarily 15-30mm, with 60mm diameters being relatively rare due to high die costs. Wall thickness is strictly controlled between 0.3-0.4mm. Regarding production line modifications, pipe extruders only require replacing the die head and shaping sleeve, while profile extruders must be equipped with a built-in vacuum shaping system. AONA has been deeply involved in extrusion die manufacturing for 27 years, providing full-process technical support.

MBBR Extrusion Tooling Technology Explained and Application Guide

In the biofilm process of wastewater treatment, the core production process of MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) packing relies on high-precision extrusion die technology. As a professional manufacturer with 27 years of experience in the extrusion die industry, AONA Extrusion Tools shares key technical points and production experience regarding MBBR Extrusion Tooling.

I. Material Selection and Extrusion Equipment Configuration

In China, HDPE 5502 high-density polyethylene is commonly used as the base material for MBBR packing production. This material has good corrosion resistance, processing fluidity, and long service life. For extrusion equipment selection, the conventional production configuration is as follows:

· Single-cavity and double-cavity packing: A 65mm single-screw extruder is recommended, with a length-to-diameter ratio (L/D) of 1:28 to 1:30. This configuration can stably output single-cavity and double-cavity MBBR packing, balancing production efficiency and product quality.

• Complex Packing Materials with Four or More Chambers: When producing high-efficiency packing materials with a four-chamber structure, a single-screw extruder with a diameter of 75mm or larger is required, along with a length-to-diameter ratio of 1:28-30. Larger diameter extruders provide sufficient plasticizing capacity and melt pressure, ensuring precise molding of the multi-chamber cross-section.

II. Product Specifications and Wall Thickness Standards

The specifications of MBBR “water treatment filter cartridges” (i.e., packing particles) directly affect biofilm formation and hydraulic performance. The mainstream diameter specifications on the market include 15mm, 25mm (most common), 30mm, and the less common 60mm. It is worth noting that the 60mm specification, due to its complex MBBR Extrusion Tooling structure and extremely high processing difficulty, has very expensive extrusion dies and is typically only used for special process requirements. Regarding wall thickness control, the industry standard is 0.3mm, with a limit not exceeding 0.4mm. The extremely thin wall thickness design aims to maximize specific surface area while reducing the packing weight and lowering operating energy consumption.

III. Differentiated Design of Extrusion Dies and Sizing Sleeves

Based on the type of your existing extrusion production line, we offer two customized solutions:

• Tube Extruder: If your equipment is a tube extrusion production line, the modification is relatively simple. Only the die head and sizing sleeve need to be replaced to achieve continuous production of MBBR filler.

• Profile Extruder: If your equipment is a profile extrusion line, the sizing sleeve needs to be specially designed with an internal vacuum structure. This is because profile extrusion has higher requirements for cross-sectional dimensional accuracy and roundness. The internal vacuum system can use negative pressure adsorption to ensure that the molten preform fits tightly against the inner wall of the sizing sleeve, thereby ensuring the consistency of the filler’s outer diameter and the uniformity of its wall thickness.
